Girls from Drenthe and Fryslân learn more about high-tech

04 april 2019 | On Girlsday, almost 400 girls between the ages of 10 and 15 from Fryslân and Drenthe learned more about our high-tech companies.

In Drachten, BD and Philips offered girls a program with workshops and a factory tour. In Roden, girls could visit Photonis and VDH Products and, in Assen, they were welcome at Resato International.

Every year, our companies manage to reach hundreds of girls who show an interest in technology. “This is why we take part in the national Girlsday,'' explains Joost Krebbekx, program manager of the Innovation Cluster Drachten. Krebbekx recognizes that high-tech industry loses many female scientific and technological talents because girls are not familiar with the jobs and educational possibilities available. “A visit to one of our companies can help to increase their insight into science, technology and ICT and may influence their career choice.” Our companies are increasingly aware that gender diversity on the work floor leads to better results. ”Companies also notice that there is great commitment and willingness among female employees to do something for the future generation. They are the employees we like to welcome within our organizations!''

About Girlsday

This was the 19thtime Girlsday took place. This year’s version started with a kick-off in Rotterdam, where Director-General Michèle Blom of Rijkswaterstaat and water board chairperson Hetty Klavers opened the event. By inviting girls on Girlsday, companies and technology departments of organizations make clear to girls that they are very welcome to work in technology. Nationwide, Girlsday reaches 11,000 girls who visit 366 technology and ICT companies. The day originated in the USA in 1993 as ‘Take-Our-Daughters-To-Work-Day’. The aim of the day is to show girls the value of good education and future career possibilities.
